security cam question

I think this is the best place to put this question because it will require a vid card. I did a few searches and turned up nothing. Long story short my car is getting knicked and scratched to death. The person I think it is never owns up to it so I want to record video of my car onto my computer so that I can pile up evidence quickly and easily. I will need a night vision camera and I think a video card or the bedazzler to run it in but not sure how to get it all going. I would really appreciate some assistance since I only know enough to get myself into trouble. Thanks in advance for any help.

This is what I was thinking I may need to get it to work:

Walmart sells those very inexpensive USB camcorders that actually work pretty well. They record every 5 or 10 seconds I believe so they dont take up an enormous amount of room on your hdd.

Thank you very much, I will have to look into those. I was hoping to get something that does non stop just because my luck is when she does it that it won't be recording time.

It just depends. You can record non stop if you want but it takes more room on your hdd.

My brother operates a recording studio and he uses these to keep tabs on what clients are doing in his sound booth since he doesn't have a window.

Yeah, I figured it would take up some space. But would that card take the signal and let me record it? I was not sure how to set that part up.

Most good web cam programs or recording programs can be set to only start recording where there is movement in a certain area. So you set up the came pointed at the car and have 3 zones marked out to trigger the recorded event. Saves HD space and you will be notified once it gets recorded.

Thank you, any recommendations to a program? Would the hardware I was thinking about work with it?

I checked a few sites for free programs and could not come up with anything good. Could someone please chime in and help me out with the hardware/software recommendations.

I didn't get a vid card yet because I got a decent one from the board itself. I was thinking about getting the one in my first post for the setup I was thinking.

all hope is not lost

A friend of mine had the same problem with his car being scratched and damaged.

Here is what he did and caught the SOAB.

He bought a small long record video camera and hide it in the car. He covered the camera execpt for the lens. Use a small Video camera and one with the lowest LUX you can find which I believe is Zero Lux.

Zero (0) lux means the camera has the lowest light capability recording. Wait until it is dark and set the camera up. You might want to go away from the house to set it up in the back seat. Make sure you hide the camera as much as possible. If there is stree light, it is a big help.

It may take a little work. Whenever you are doing any type of security work keep all info to yourself. Tell no one including your mother, wife, brother, etc. Because the only way to keep a secret is to keep it to yourself.

This may be easier than you thing, but it will take a long recording video camera with 0 lux capability and time. Try to determine what time (day time night time) your car is being damaged and what days if you can.

Good Luck

Thank you very much, the problem I have is I really don't know when it happens because my car sits around most of the time since I work where I live. The other problem is that it may be multiple people but I think it is one person specifically. It happens on both sides of my car and would be hard to put in the window of my apartment without them seeing. I went from having one dent in my car to a couple of days later with about 10 dents and deep scratches. I really appreciate the input, I just think having one of the small security cams and an input on the computer would be the easiest to hide.
