Ok.
My building has a ... hangin' room.
with a small little conference room, connected to a big room with a pool table and a couch several chairs and tables followed with a couch and a plasma tv.

Perfect place for a 2 man lan.

Theres a wall port labeled Cat5.Then theres 2 ports with ethernet and phone line.
then, the additional wireless signal that they broadcast in the 2 computer, computer room.

What would i need to hook myself up to the internet there. like a router? connect to internet on my desktop which will be there, and hooking up my 360 to get internet.

thanks

typically voice and data are ran together, but depending on if the data drop is even hot or not depends on what you can do. What do you mean, in my building? I would make sure you have permission to do what you are trying to do first hand. Invading someone's private network is considered trespassing just so you know.

Its a public apartment. who ever lives there is welcomed to use the rooms.
i cant make it private, but ill post a sign saying ur welcomed in.
a dude set up his server in the small room, wires everywhere.

dont worry, its allowed

I was assuming so, but still I think that more information should be given. I mean if its part of an apartment building they should have someone there on hand who can answer these questions. If he is asking us, it sounds like more of how do I do this even though I am not suppose to thing.....

Just ask your apartment manager, IT perosn, maintance person etc. In fact if they don't have one I am sure you can even volunteer to set that stuff up, it might even look good on a resume. You may not get paid for volunteering but its experience, which is more important than a lot of things.

Ok.
My dad works in the building, he ok'ed this.
And iam asking on terms of networking.
it would be silly to ask you if iam allowed to do so.

Yes I understand that, your question is very broad, its like asking how do I skin a cat? Assuming that the data drop is hot, you can simply just patch a switch in and voila. Any kind of DHCP server/Router should be taken care on their end and not needed on yours. Beyond that it depends on what you are trying to accomplish. For a simple LAN party, patching in a switch and then hooking every client into that switch would hook you into your building's network; and if your building's network had internet so would you. No routing should be needed.

seeing how i live down the hall and theres windows *with a huge wall, able to transfer cables*. i can set the phone line up in apt. and send it out the outside ledges then into the room and hook a router up to it.

and i got internet.

Now.
What do i need to hook ... 2 desktops up to the same network for a mini lan gaming ?
and for that matter adding an apple laptop

thanks

It's pretty simple actually, and most likely this will work unless they have pre-assigned IP's for every computer.

Simply buy a router (wired or wireless), connect an ethernet plug from the wall to the WAN port on the router, enable DHCP on the router (easiest), and then have your friends connect via wired or wirelessly.

actually you don't need a router at all, you just need a switch to become part of the network. A router would work but it is not needed.

True, but if they want to setup a mini lan for gaming, I think a router would be more appropriate.

how so? I am not sure how it is more appropriate, because of the DHCP server? Like I said there is probably already a router in place if it is internet ready.

From what I gather, hes in a large building and in a room where there is an ethernet port for a computer to connect to. If he uses his router, he can have a seperate LAN for only his computer buddies to be on, meanwhile having internet access.

Having a switch will have his friends using the buildings LAN for gaming, which they may not approve of.
