Sending Old Hard Drive to Dell

I called Dell today and they are going to send me a new hard drive for my laptop. However, they want me to send the old one back to them. I do not wish to do this since my hard drive contains personal information on it. Will they penalize me if I don't send it back or will nothing happen?

They will charge you for the new drive since they are replacing it under warranty I assume? Can you boot to the drive and take your data off of it? If not, you have no choice in the matter and have to return it or get charged for the new drive.

What you want to do is back-up all your data then format it. Formating it will erase everything on it. http://gparted.sourceforge.net/ Burn that program to a disc and boot into it. Then erase the partition on the disc. If you want to keep the current hard drive, you can buy a standard laptop hard drive on websites like newegg and tigerdirect.
