here is what happened:

i was playing online command and conquer generals zero hour, then all of a sudden my computer shuts the game down and says a serious error has occured (something about its either viruses, overheating or somethign else)...

i just did a fresh install of windows last month and i have barely used windows (i dual boot and only use windows for games) so i doubt its viruses (i use avast antivirus, is that good?)

so, is there anyway i can prevent it from overheating like that without spending any money, as this computer is old and not worth it.

If you have any fans in your house that are portable, you might want to try and keep it on in the room the computer is in while you're playing on it.

Do you overclock? I find that Zero Hour is very susceptible to overclocking. I find that an overclock might be stable in other games, can make zero hour crash, so if you are overclocking revert back to default and see if that helps. What kind of system do you have? Why are people so quick to jump to the conclusion that its overheating? Does your motherboard and graphics card have onboard temperature sensors?

i dont overclock
i dont think my motherboard or graphics card have temperature sensors

and here is my system specs:
2.6GHz intel celeron processor
512MB RAM (DDR)
64MB ATI All-In-Wonder 7500 graphics card
(i think thats all you need, but if there is something else that you need to know ill tell you)

well, im pretty sure its overheating now, i was playing again and it started smelling like fire... (not good)

so, today i took it apart and blew away the dust and fuz and everything that has collected in there, so i guess ill see how it does now...
