im setting up my friends adsl router basically i got it all work in tip top shape until a few days ago were he couldnt go on the internet no more, so i popped round yesterday evening and i have got no idea atall whats wrong with it, basically the network icon in the system tray reads limited or no connectivity and displayed the explanation mark, so what ive tried to do is uninstall the network card and let windows reinstall it next time windows starts up, also ive tried to let windows repair it but it cant do it, and thast about all ive done. i cant even log on the router configuration settings through the browser, i dont even no why it doesnt do it because its connected to the pc via the patch cable. please any help would be very appreciated, thanks

sounds like a DHCP problem - you're not being assigned an IP address by the router. can you set a manual ip address on the machine in the same subnet as the one the router is meant to have?

start> control pannel> network connections > right click the connection u want >properties>from the list in the properties window click the IP verson 4 icon > click properties

click "use the following IP address" and enter one number above the address of the router. so if the router is meant to be 192.168.1.1 you put in 192.168.1.2 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and a gateway that is the router 192.168.1.1

then try and access the router through the browser.

if that doesnt work you may need to hard reset the router :-(

Pull the power plug out of the router for a minimum 30 seconds and then plug it back in. Wait a minute and then try to reconnect the PC. It would probably be a good idea to restart it first.

If that still doesn't work, go to a command prompt and type in "ipconfig /flushdns"

Then, "ipconfig /release" followed by "ipconfig /renew".

That should fix the problem. If it doesn't, download "WinsockXP Fix" and run it.
