Ok so here is the problem that im having. I lent my laptop to a friend because he needed to use it for school for a bit, well I guess his brother decided to be funny and put a boot password on the computer, but he does not remeber what he set the password as.

I know on a normal pc you can just change the jumper and you can reset the bios, but I have no idea what to do in this case... does anyone have any ideas?? im sure this is not the first time...

any help would be greatly appreciated...

Thank you...

Some laptops also have a jumper, some have a dip-switch, some you just have to remove the battery for a while(though some batteries aren't removable!)

so if it has a jumper does this mean that I will have to remove the entire case to get at it? are they usually located in a generic place?

sorry If I sound stupid here, but what is a DIP switch?

and when you say battery are you talking about the laptop battery or like a bios battery?

Thanks again.

They would be located on the motherboard, which, in a lappy, is often hard to get to.

He means the BIOS battery (called the CMOS battery)

What is your laptop model?

i posted the same reply somewhere else in this forum for someone with the same problem.
remove the keyboard via screws at the back. the screws are sometimes under panels or stickers, so bear this in mind.
be careful you dont damage the ribbon cable from the keyboard and lift it up allowing access to the innards. look for an oversized watch battery, remove it for about 10 seconds and replace it. this should have reset the CMOS.
hope this helps, i hate little bastards playing with my computers

1. Not all laptops have screws in the back to hold the keyboard in
2. Not all CMOS batteries are watch batteries.

This is why we need your laptop make/model.

call the laptop vender, and your most likely going to have to open up the laptop in order to find the cmos battery

sorry If I sound stupid here, but what is a DIP switch?
A series of tiny switches built into circuit boards.
