Did you setup all machines on the same subnet? Are your clients setup for your server as the gateway? Do you want your server to be the gateway or just to share files? Do you have a router?

thanks, sure did. manage to create mapped network drive from server 2003 to desktop win7x64 and laptop win7x32.

mamaned to get the permissions for file sharing set up, but its funny when i connect to mapped network drive.

first, it asks me for my local password on win7x64 machine, but i have to use my server password to log in???? then it asks me for log in server credentials, and i use the server2003 log in and it works???

dont understand why local win7x64 password doesnt work?

any help appreciated, thx

Is your server setup as a domain controller? If so and your computers are bound to that domain, that would be why.

thanks, no, not set up as domain controller.

had to go in and share evry file on the local machines to copy to server.

seems like some files dont copy???

hard drive says 260gb, but when i copy it says copying 54 gb to network share on server 2003.

hi! based on my understanding of ur network setup, the machine is ip stactically configured and connectivity issues are resolved even with the cisco switch.abt the files copy thing, check if disk quota is not enabled on the server.u can verify this by 1 right click drive c
2 click sharing and security on the menu
3 then click quota tab to check if it is enabled.
if this is not the problem, then u shuld check" identity and acess management"or "storage management" features such as File Server Resource Manager (storage utilization reporting)
Enhanced quota management
File screening limits files types allowed
Storage Manager for Storage Area Networks(SAN) (storage arra of the win server 2003r2.wish u d best.

thanks, I checked Z: drive quota in properties, no quotas are set. checked file server management(no quotas), checked share folder management and file server resource monitor, and storage manager for sans(nothing listed on server?)

my share (Z:) is on server 2003.

i am trying to copy the (C:) drive from various shares to the (Z:) share, so i can reinstall the Operating systems back on local machines, so i wanted to back up all files and documents to share.

tried again, my (C:) drive on dell mini shows 260 GB, but only copies 54GB.

happened with win7 machine, and after i copied basically folder on local to folder on share, i got all the data. just seems like i cant copy a whole drive (C:) on local machine to (Z:) share on server.

any ideas? thoughts?

the local admin of the server owns the share, and SMB requires authentication. If you are doing distributed network shares on your network you need to add permissions for those users to access those files. Setting up a domain controller and having users log into a domain account and then applying ownership to those accounts would fix you up.
