Server as personal computer?

Hello,

Recently i have been looking for a new desktop computer to do some gaming on. I have looked on alot of places online, but i came upon one website that offerred servers for an awesome price. I dont know much about computers besides what their specs mean, but isn't a server pretty much a sooked up desktop computer? And could i install a regular os on it thats not the server os?

Any replys would be great :)

p.s sorry for the very short message but im typing this on an iphone

Not sure what sooked up means... :D

But - server / PC are basically the same parts. PSU, MOBO, RAM, CPU, etc - with a Server operating system - and set up to do the function you want the Server to server in your network. It may have RAID setup for Hard Drive redundancy - or it might have a lower Power PSU - b/c you don't need to feed a video card.

You could throw on a PC - Operating System onto a Server if it has all the specs you're looking at - but I think you wouldn't be saving any money doing it. Also - Hard Drives for a Server may not be as fast as one for a PC you'd want to game on.

I think apples to apples - you'd be better off buying a Big Box PC - dollar wise - with an O/S - than buying a Server - and adding a new O/S for 100+ dollars.
 
Servers usually have specific hardware. Whilst you can use one you wouldn't want to. Mainly because most of them are REALLY loud because of the fact they're usually locked in a room on their own or are in a datacentre with other loud servers.

By the way Jamin43, you can get 15k rpm SAS drives, plenty fast enough :D
 
Thanks for the replys guys, i think im going to buy the server because im getting a good deal on it, as for noise, im going to keep it in a closed closet so im not woried about it

p.s i also have the windows 7 os already
