I've been told that fiber will be available in my area in the near future so I will be able to do something I've wanted to do for a long time, build a dedicated gaming server :D.

Would you guys recommend me using vm's so I can work on individual game servers without having to interrupt others, in case things like restarts?

I would like to hear how others would go about building one please.

I want to be able to host quite a few games, so I think I'm going to need something fairly powerful with plenty of ram and ssd storage. Unfortunately the only reliable site I can purchase from due to my location is www.pccomponentes.com, its even a pain to get sites like ebay and Amazon to deliver to me :(. I would like to see some build suggestions and get some advice please, price isn't an issue, but ofc I don't want to waste money unnecessarily.

What's your budgetaries? Do you want to 'git gud' or still have a humble home lab?

How do you feel about 'real servers' like a r630 with the specs you want? More enterprised approach with additional features over rolling your own like idrac.
 
The server would just be for hosting games and most likely not much else, I'm already using a basic hp server with ecc mem as a file server.

My budget is 2000 euros, ofc I want best bang for the buck, something that meets my needs without over spending.

I would like the remote management features that come with real servers so trusted people can work on game servers when I'm indisposed, preferably without control over the whole server. I'm fairly good with networking in general and setting up servers within windows, but I'm worried about getting into something too complex with a unfamiliar OS which may have a steep learning curve.

I will be honest, I was going to be lazy and run windows vm's on a windows pc with each game server running on a different vm, create users on the vm's and allow them rdc in or log into the game server to remote manage them. I know this is a bad way of doing it and there are much better solutions, can you suggest something simple and effective which remote users less computer literate than myself would be able to use with a little guidance?

Yeah, I realised it wouldn't be a good drive for heavy writing workloads, hopefully once the servers are up it should just be a matter of maintenance, patches and such.

The servers on that site are damn expensive, for the same price I could build something more powerful, can some server features be added with expansion cards or software?
I need a good solution for remote management, I can setup a static ip, port forward, bios power on, configure users, vm's, rdc and command prompt for restarts etc......, this is no problem, but I'm sure there is a better way.
