Ok so im still debating what to do with my old computer. One idea that was shot my way is a file server.... but i don't know, for one, why one would need it if at most 2 ppl counting myself will be connected to the internet around me at any given time. So would it be worth it to run a server or just cannabalize what i can and give the rest to the family?

I'd keep it as a spare computer. How much beter will it really make your other computers? You might beable to take 2-3 parts out to put in another computer but honesly I think its worth it to just leave the good running computer intact and use it when needed! Even if it sits there most of the time its always great to have another comp incase you really need it. Personal Preference of course.

I have both a backup computer and a home server. As I upgrade my system, parts trickle down from my main rig to my backup, and finally to my home server. It's always nice to have a backup system in case your system goes down, and to have extra components that you can cannibalize if necessary.

as far as "why" have a home server, it's a place to backup your files, or in my case it also doubles as a internet radio station, a pop3 mail server, hosts our all female clan forums, our teamspeak server, and serves our two internet game servers.

Next year I will buy a new computer and use this one as a server. It will be my SA:MP clan server.

That is what i'm wanting to do, build a good intel build and then use my current AMD as a music file server and a file server, install XP Pro on it and customize it to be a server :P :)

might as wel install w2k3 or w2k8 on it. Better performance and much more possibilities.
