Server or desktop processor

sup tech heads, haven't been here in a while. missed ya guys i guess ;)

question, i was looking to buy a mac, but cant yet afford it. so im going to build a budget workstation pc (if that in fact exists) till i can scrummage up the dough for a mac pro, or till my student loans come in ;]

I need a computer that can handle running Adobe Premier and Photoshop and illustrator, not necessarily at the same time, but defiantly run them smoothly. Not much gamming, maybe the occasional Sims 3, or L4d. nothing intense at that.

Ive been looking at processors, I want to go Quad core, not i7. and shopping around on newegg i came upon the section of server processors. i was comparing the prices/clocks of desktop/server and i found a C2Q @2.33 is about 90 bucks cheaper than a xeon quad @2.4

what is it that makes a processor "server" its ability to tether with multi-cpu systems? It can run longer, go faster?

what do you think would be better for editing/ minor OC'ing. I know Mac Pro's run Xeon's so thats what headed me in that direction, but as i said. im shopping with my budget cap on.

thanks guys

If you have a budget cap then definitely go with a desktop quad core processor. Server CPUs won't really benefit you at all as you're not running a server. They're designed to run 24/7 without any stability issues.

Server processors tend to lean more towards stability rather than speed. Many of them support ECC and such which can cause some pretty substantial performance implications.

The i7 is a great choice for a high-end processor. It will overclock and multitask like no one's business.

^ Indeed, but wouldn't the i5 or a phenom be better in his case? The i7 is pretty expensive...

why not a Q8200 or Q8200? even a Q6600 would do for what he wants.

It would...but Intel has killed off skt lga 775 so i doubt very much there will be any new processors released for this socket in the future if he wants to upgrade.

Not only that, the core i5 prices are pretty decent....i think he would be better getting a I5 :)

i dont think i can afford an i7 or i5 machine. and idc about having lga775, cause the next upgrade will be a dual quad core mac pro.

but i think i got it. if a 8200 will do what i want. ill do that. its clocked pretty low @2.3...guess ill need to OC that ;]

Core i5 750 is $199, only $50 more than the Q8200.

RAM will cost about the same, and you can get a $100
P55 motherboard.

It's not that much more expensive, and you could sell it
when you get your Mac.?
