server os help!

Hello all,

I'm new to the world of servers! lawl complete noob. I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction. I'm building a server machine to hold all my media/photos/music etc. I will (hopefully) be using it as a media center and also as a place to stream/download my photos or movies if i'm on the road via internet. I was looking at windows home server, but some people are saying i'm better off using linux based servers. I have never used anything linux sooo i'm looking for some info. My other computers are a gaming PC, iMac, macbook air, and just your average HP laptop. thanks for any and all help!

Since Linux is free, give it a try. Any version will work.

If you can't figure it out, then go Windows. Windows Home server is easy, and intuitive if you use Windows.
I have built a few Home servers for friends using it.

For Home use though any version of Windows can really be used for a server. I use XP Home, because I had a copy to use.
 
i wouldn't waste time with linux. it's a good OS if you already know it. but learning it is a painful process , & then applying what you learned to build a server... that's just too much trouble. stick with what you know. keep it simple.
i went with windows xp after messing around with linux and freenas for a few months and getting nowhere.
 
It is a bit harder to learn but for free I think it is worth a shot. I used a few file sharing programs while in Ubuntu and I just had to read a few pages on how to set it up and it was working just fine.

Once download finishes, do a md5sum to check if it matches the one given at the download site. Burn at no more than 8X to DVD (it's 1.8GB).

Or CentOS, from what I hear, is a good server distro.
