Server Question

Alright, I've now been working at Staples as an EasyTech for 5 months. I put an add on craigslist looking for side work, doing hardware/software installs, wireless networks, etc. Beginner stuff. I got an email from a guy tonight saying he works for this company, and he is looking for a tech in my area to do some installs. He says it would be 1 server and 1 computer, but that's all the info he gave. He said it was a simple process and it should take about 2 hours. And, he would pay me $90 per job. I replied asking for more details. He also said that I would have to get a HIPPA certificate online.

Anybody have any thoughts on this? I've never installed a server, is it fairly simple?

TIA.

The server OS installs just like a desktop OS. The difficulty lies in what sort of network setup he is looking for. I would assume that it wouldn't be peer to peer. Not to say that it is difficult but there are more steps. If he can provide you with an accurate set up manual for the first couple of setups it should be no problem.

if you are just physically installing them, that is fine, if you have to load and configure a server OS $90/job is an outrage, it should be more like $90/hour.

Also, make sure you know all the regulations regarding HIPPA, because you can be held liable for negligence

HIPAA cert is required. He hasn't responded yet, but if he wants to pay me 90 a pop, he will be paying the $500 cert.

I don't know a server job on the planet that's a two hour install. Second, I wouldn't even show up at his site for $90, and you can guarantee he knows that, especially mentioning things like HIPPA.

Tell him no thanks. Seriously. I'm willing to bet good money there's a lot more to that than meets the eye.

Installing Windows Server with the updates takes two hours by itself. Configuring it *properly* can take several hours. Don't do it. I smell a rat.. A very big one.

if i want to i can take days for configuring 1 server correctly.
Windows server 2003 has many features you can use.

i wouldn't take up his offer. sounds crappy and kinda shady to me like SirKenin said.

You can physically install a server on a rack (as long as the rack isn't a mess) in under an hour. I have done it before. If you have to load and configure a server OS, that does take some time, and you should be charging by the hour for that.
