Server setup??

I would like some info from y'all, as the closest thing to experts that I have access to, to explain exactly how a server computer works??

I was thinking of using Ubuntu server edition on My laptop to use it as a server for my computer (to hold and backup my info), as the screen doesn't work, and I can hook it up to the monitor to set it up.
I was thinking that I could find a PCI network card for the desktop that communicates in and out (internet in, server out), and have the laptop communicated to via the built in ethernet port.
Will this work, or rather, if it won't then what would I need to make it work??
 
Your best bet is to buy a router and just hook the computer and the laptop up to it. As for ubuntu, if you new to linux, I would recommend installing ubuntu desktop as it has a gui which makes it easier to setup and you can do the same thing as the server.

I would install it and setup VNC server which would allow you to control the computer with your desktop.

I have ubuntu 10.10 Desktop(i think its 64 bit on it) already (I used the whole diak drive when installing ((extra HDD, got my Win 7/XP drive on my desktop (not attached))). How would I get VNC server onto it??
 
I think it should be installed already, if you go into a terminal and try

sudo vncserver
it should start the sever. If you dont know your ip address, type

ifconfig
under eth0 it should tell you what your ip address it. On your pc, download http://www.realvnc.com/products/free/4.1/download.html and then under the ip address type the ip address you found under ifconfig. it should then ask you for your password, this should be the same password you set for your user.

if all goes to plan, it should allow you to see and control the server
 
Ok, guess its not installed by default.

type in terminal

sudo apt-get install vnc4server
you should then be able to run the above command
