I bought a Dell PowerEdge 2950 server. It's got two Quad Core Xeon Processors, 16 GB RAM, 6 - 146 GB SAS 10 K hard drives, 2 Gigabyte network adapters. I also put a sound card in it. It a lot of fun if you want to learn about servers. Best thing is it only cost $290. I got it on eBay. I look up tutorials on the internet, and there are a lot of you tube videos about how to do things with servers. Right now I'm learning about web hosting. It's a great hobby.

What kind of power does that pull from the wall?

DL380 G6 usually seem to be relatively inexpensive and significantly more power efficient.

I don't run it all the time, just when I using it. I really don't get as much time as I would like to play with it. It's just a hobby. I wouldn't use it as a main computer, but for the price and what it has, it's great fun. I know quite a lot about PC's so I thought this was the next step up.

What do you usually run on it? Do you prefer baremetal installs or did you add some sort of hypervisor?

I run Windows server 2008 r2. If your talking about virtual machines. It has Hyper-V built in. I ran 4 virtual machine at one point.
