Service Pack 2 Install problem

After recently having to reformat my computer, i am now going through the process of having to reinstall all of the necessary software.

I downloaded SP2 without a problem but as it installs it will pop up with cmd.exe already in use and give me the options retry and cancel. Retry does nothing so i am forced to cancel the installation.

I have no idea what would be using cmd.exe, there were no other (visible) programs running during any of the times i have attempted to install SP2.

I tried the usual reboot, but that didnt help.

What would be using cmd.exe? How can i shut it down?

thanks so much in advance

There are few requisites needed prior to installing SP2 to see if your system is ready. I didn't seem to run into the problems that others like yourself are having getting SP2 to go on. The first thing to do is make sure you have all updates except SP2 installed and the latest SP2 ready drivers for your hardwares installed. Also run a sweep of the system with AdAware, Spybot Serach & Destroy, Ewido, etc. to see if "something else" is running on your system. Is the bios updated to fully support the cpu you are running?

One tip would be to open the task manager and highlight the "svghost.exe" and click on the end process button. The cmd.exe is what displays the version of Windows you are running along with the copyright information. But one warning is about the cmd.exe being found in the wrong place. That would indicate a virus or trojan has made it's way onto the system there. Some steps for removing a bogus copy of the file can be seen at http://www.file.net/process/cmd.exe.html

Microsoft's SP2 support page offers two different methods for installing SP2 when you see problems when trying to install it. The best thing to advise here is refer to the detailed instructions seen at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/885626
