service packs

I would not remove it. Just for the simple way to go back to SP2 in case SP3 starts giving you problems.

SP3 contains everything from SP2. There is no need to, nor is it recommended to get rid of it. I am not even sure Windows would let you remove SP2 since SP3 essentially depends on it.

Yup, you gotta have SP2 in order to install SP3.

No offence to anyone, but this is not strictly true if its Windows XP in question. It's not really correct that you can't install SP3 if you don't have SP2 installed. This of course I am saying ONLY for Windows XP!Windows Vista is different story...

If you are using Windows XP,you can install SP3 without installing SP1 and even SP2 before that because XP service packs are cumulative. That means that the newest service pack for Windows XP contains ALL the things from previous service packs plus ALL THE NEW THINGS and therefore it is NOT neccessary to install SP1 and SP2 if you want to install SP3!

Windows Vista is a different story. If you want to install SP2 on Windows Vista then you MUST install SP1 before installing SP2!

Now back to XP SP3...
If you have installed SP1 and SP2 on XP and after some time you also put SP3 on XP then it is NOT RECOMMENDED to remove SP2 because if you do you will also remove some things that SP3 contains. In some cases you can't even remove the SP2 if you have SP3 installed!Same for SP2!

ADVICE: NEVER REMOVE ANY PREVIOUS SERVICE PACKS AFTER INSTALLING THE NEWER ONE!!!

Cheers!

Well I gotta disagree STARS, Windows XP SP3 is incremental and not cumulative and needs at least SP1a to install and be fully updated, most service packs from Microsoft are incremental now as is the case with Vista.

LoL then explain how I was able to install SP3 on XP without any service pack :P

Its pretty easy. You just must take some of the files that SP1 installs and make few registry changes and then you will be able to install XP SP3 without installing SP1 or SP2 ;)
Of course this is not an easy proceedure so my recommendation is to rather install SP1 before installing SP3.

Anyway IT IS possible to install SP3 without SP1 or SP2.I have done it twice ^^
