Setting up a VPN

I have used VPN software in the past (Hamachi), and have had mixed results. The general idea was creating a LAN between friends so that we might play games with eachother.

9 times out of 10, the connection was finicky and unstable.

I was wondering if it was possible for me to simply host the VPN on my local computer rather than connecting to an outside host (so anyone who wanted to connect would just connect to me).

Any thoughts on this? I don't know much about VPN's so any help is appreciated.

Thanks, Jeremy

That's where Hamachi shines. Simplicity. How recently have you used it?

Have you tried OpenVPN?

But.. with Hamachi, multiple parties connect to an outside server which connects them under a virtual LAN... right?

My point was that outside servers can be un-reliable.

No, I havnt tried OpenVPN yet, I was looking at Remobo.. seems very similar to Hamachi.

Hamachi is a conduit to help facilitate the VPN between multiple parties. The actual VPN is only between the parties involved. It does not setup the VPN between you and an outside server. Only the peering is aided by the outside server.
