Setting up home LAN

I have 2 routers. The other one is the gateway to the internet and the other one is simply there to give me more space to connect my cables. Currently, every computer has its own IP address so i must use the public address to connect to them. As that IP isnt a local IP, every file transfer will be slow.

But if i change the TCP/IP settings in both computers to something like 192.168.1.3 and 192.168.1.4 and set my router as the default gateway, then i can use those IPs to connect and file transfer goes very fast but then i cant connect to the normal internet anymore until i change the TCP/IP settings back to automatic.

In my school every computer has IP address starting 10.1.x.x and they all can see each other and have fast file transfer but still can connect to the internet.
How can i create a network like this at home between my computers? Im using Windows btw.
 
Did you give the computers a DNS address? If you don't, then they won't be able to connect. You can just use Google's DNS of 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
 
Try setting the static IP's to the addresses the router assigns them. Open a command prompt on each one and type "ipconfig" (without quotes). Copy IP address, subnet, and default gateway.
 
The router only assings IP starting with 84.250.x.x and isnt that a public IP?
The router i'm trying to use connects to internet through the other router.

Do you mean you have a modem with a single connection to the internet, and then have a wired router branching off that for more ports?
 
The easiest way to set this up is to buy a switch instead of trying to do this through a router. It can be done but you will have to adjust some settings inside the router configuration page.

There are a few things you need to change.

1. Change the internal IP of the second router to match the first router. For example if the first router ip address is 192.168.1.1 then change the internal IP of the second router to 1921.168.1.2

2. Disable dhcp of the second router

To connect the routers together you must do the following.

Use an ethernet cable to connect from lan port on first router to lan port on second router(do not use the internet port).

You most likely will have to shut down both routers and turn the first one on and then the second and you should have internet to any device attached to second router.

I will try this today.

EDIT: I did the steps you provided and i can access the internet but there still isnt a LAN network and my IP is still the same it used to be, not a local IP.

If you plug the ethernet cable from the modem into the WAN port on the router, and then set the router to assign IP addresses via DHCP you should be fine. No need to go messing around with static IP's.

I did this now but with no luck. And it might be worth mentoining that i need to change my computers IP to 192.168.1.3 to access the routers or modems settings and when my IP is that i cant use the internet until i set the settings to automatic again.
