setting up my own server.

I am looking into getting a server for my own webhosting but i dont know much about it. I have looked around and havent seen any good answers. So far from what i have read on the net is i can setup my own server with a cable or dsl connection, and i may have to pay an extra fee for doing so through my provider which would be ok. Basically i want to run a indexer website. I dont want to go through regular hosts, They either wont allow it or i run into another issue with them. I want to be able to run my site how i want it to make it as profitable as i can make it without any BS restrictions i get through other places. i dont know much about servers themselves and what to buy. it seems to me its just basically a fast computer running as a server. if thats the case would building be my cheapest option? If so does anyone want to compile a good list of parts for me? I can go up to $1000.00 USD but i really want to stay as low as possible. Any info on servers or running servers anyone wants to share would be cool too. Thanks alot! :)

Does anyone have any ideas? all I want to do is build my own custom pc and use it as a web server only. I have been looking at amd parts to make it cheaper but not sure what to get. I would like to make this as cheap as possible but fast. I have been looking at actual servers from dell and whatnot but it seems they just make everything expensive and I could build something just as good if not better for cheaper.

I can tell you right now you are much better off with hosting it with a third party. Hosting it yourself is expensive, since it will require you to do a few things:

1) Have a static IP

2) Configure DNS properly

3) Have a business class or high bandwidth internet connection (expensive)

4) Maintain your own server (responsibilities and you have to know how to do it yourself)

5) backing up all data is on you, hardware failure is on you

I would suggest you just pay for hosting. If you know what you are doing and want your own full blown virtual server, you can look at something like:

www.linode.com , but that is really for more advanced server admins as you have to actually install the OS and set up the web server yourself.

Well my problem with 3rd parties is obeying their rules. I want to run several different file indexers and possibly a torrent tracker but i cant find any hosts that will let me do so because its a risk for them. That made me decide to run my own server and put any risk on myself if there is even any at all. I already pay for fast enough internet for this. I dont plan on hosting files either so i wont need alot of bandwidth just enough for people visting my site and using several different search engine functions. I already have my main site design setup and cant use it on my host i have now or any others i have talked to "and i have talked to alot". So im stuck hosting my own server which im ok with. I just need help compiling a list of components. Im not sure how much processing speed etc i will need to get by so i thought i would ask for some help. I have been looking at newegg alot and cannot decide on what i want due to my lack of knowledge of servers themselves.

Well, you won't get much help from anyone really making a torrent tracker. Do you have any experience running a web server?

well i havent decided to make a torrent tracker. It is more just a thought because I want to do alot of indexing like I said. torrent trackers are risky business and its more just an example of restrictions by hosts "I also dont need any copywrite lawsuits lol". I just dont want restrictions. If i could find a host that would let me index millions of pages then everything would be ok. I already have a search engine site but it doesnt index, it just searches other search engines for content "ie Google". I want to be able to index and not have any problems. I do have little experience running servers but I can run them.

If you go with a hosting company that allows you to run your own full blown web server, there are no restrictions. They don't have access to your server. However, they may not want any P2P traffic on their network equipment.

What are you so worried about restrictions, if you are going to set up anything illegal you will get sued eventually. Even the pirate bay came down to officials.

Well then I might just try going with a host then. I have had a problem with restrictions cause for one I use adult oriented advertising so I have to use an adult host. I talked to several other hosts and they told me either no adult ads or no indexing or no to something else. There seems to always be at least one thing I want to do and cant. My site or sites I plan on using are in no way illegal and use no p2p traffic. All im doing is creating a content search engine, there for I need to index a ton of stuff. My past 2 hosts and current host offered unlimited bandwidth and unlimited space yet im not aloud to use any kind of indexing scripts which i find to be bs but whatever i will figure something out. All i really want to do is build a server, Put Linux on it and use apache to host my site and thats it, Its fairly simple. I just wanted some opinions on what parts I should use and see how cheap I could do it. I created a newegg build I will post later. I have to go right now. I would appreciate some help choosing a build. I would like to use Intel but if I can go cheap and get away with Amd I wouldnt mind that either.

this is what i have come up with. I'm not sure if its compatible or if i should change some stuff but here it is. I decided on this processor and mobo because if you buy them together you save like $120.

how does this look?

I'm running my sites on a $150 Dell Power Edge 2650 with Dual 2.4 Xeons, 4 Gig ram, 4 36 gig SCSI hotswap drives with CentOS 5.3. Only down time since set up was due to bad UPS batteries during a power outage.

Don't forget a good firewall...
