Setting up password on wireless internet?

This is the 1 thing i always have problems with when dealing with computers. But how do i add a password to my netgear router so that only people knowing the password can access my point? i tried some of the security options but they require you to enter the pass phrase (like my dogs name) and then this really long encryption key and i don't want to make everyone in my family have to memorize that!

Try enabling WPA passphrase encryption rather than WEP in your router settings.

WPA > WEP anyday.

I tried wpa, I put in the passphrase (mydogsname) then i go to my laptop and enter the passphrase into that network key boxit just says "please wait while i connect" and does that forever!

make sure your laptop wireless card has the latest drivers before trying this, if it is wpa capable.
