Setting up 'Remote Desktop' in Vista Ultimate

I saw that Vista Ultimate has the Remote Desktop option and I was curious about setting this up so I could access my cpu from work. First off though, what can do from remote desktop? Acces files? Initiate downloads on my home pc? shut it off remotely? run updates? What can I DO with it.

Next, my work computer is a pretty old Windows 98 SP2 computer. I dont think this matters because Im guessing to access my home PC I would use the IP address in IE somehow? Any help would be great! Thanks! :)

so work is win98 ? and home is vista ?, if my ram serves me right, 98 does not have remote desktop ,but you can get other clients or program off google, i think, and when you access something via IP address 99% of time it's file sharing.
Just like ftp, you can only access file and folders but cannot do anything else

Yeah you are going to have to run third party software like VNC, Tight VNC, real VNC or the like. Google them, most of them are free.

Security notes to consider -

Lots of free remote desktop client software packages do not encrypt data
you must configure your router to forward, or open the ports for the remote software.

Easies thing to do is probably just use web based solution like www.logmein.com since all it requires is a web browser.

Also, most likely you have a dynamic IP address. So, you will need to use a service like www.dyndns.org to track your IP.

Yes, typically your ISP assigns your modem an IP address. This is typically assigned dynamically, so it will change. The dyndns software will keep track of it, so when it changes you are updated and then you can remote into your home computer. I used to remote in to my PC at home all the time to pay my bills online when I was at work, or to view some page that the web filter was blocking.
