Sex and Violence Filter

Not sure whether this class as a soft or hardware question but I desperately need some help.

I have a small charity clothes shop and cafe that I would like to offer wireless internet access for customers. Its not very busy and I have a wireless router with a 20MB line so bandwidth should be sufficient.

However, I don't understand how I can prevent customers accessing inappropraite violent and pornographic websites as there will be children eating there and browsing.

I can install some kind of Microsoft live family filter on my own computer but what about for all the customers that walk in with their own laptop.

Is there some kind of software I install on the main computer that the router is connected to or should I buy another router that would have these options to filter content automatically?

I am fairly computer literate and would welcome all suggestions :)

It is funny you make this...my buddy sent me this link as he runs a cafe http://www.handycafe.com/en/ and he claims it works really well. He limits each connection to 100kb download and 10kb upload to prevent any torrent users from abusing the shops line. It also appears to block a lot of the sites but beware you can't block them all as thousands are made every day. I would get a labtop from a friend and test the system out (search porn/violence out) if they have a "add list" go proactive and find the "best sites" that violate the terms you set and block them manually.

I warn you I don't mess the software but he had nothing but good things to say. If it really is free then whats the harm to test it out :) Also encrypt your traffic....unless they changed things you are responsible for anything someone does with your unencrypted connection.

Thx Twist86, the only problem is that seem to be for cyber cafe where they are managing their own computers so they will have that software installed on their own PC which the user will use.

For my situation, it would be customers bringing in their own laptop to access my wireless broadband while they are having a coffee. Abit like McDonalds free wi-fi access I suppose ...

I know you can block sites from within your router but that wouldn't really be an option considering the number of sites you want to block (even if it was, it would be quite tedious).

I am just guessing here, off the top of my head but, you could probably set your computer up as some kind of server thereby installing some software on it that would do the blocking for you. I will do some research to see if that is possible while hopefully someone more knowledgeable replies with something help (and probably debunk what I just said).

Most routers will let you block specific URL's, rather than keywords so this probably wouldn't help you.

yea, ddwrt would give you the flexibility to filter out the trash, but you need to have a box that supports it, i warn not for the faint of heart, it can brick your router if you do it wrong. i flashed my linksys router with ddwrt, but i think i need to upgrade the firmware soon, its getting flakey at times
