shared hdd partition

my uncle gave me a 300GB hd to put in my pc. pretty cool, i think. anyway, he told me that after i install it, to partition it in half and share 1 of the partitions over my network so my family can store data on it since their hd is very low on space. do i just have to enable sharing over the network for this to work? or do i need to do something else?

I'm going to assume that your computer is already part of the home network. To share the partition do the following:
1) Open Windows Explorer (Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Windows Explorer)
2) In the left-hand pane, right-click on the drive you want to share and choose Sharing and Security from the context menu.
3) Under the Network sharing and security section of the box that pops up, select the Share this folder on the network and Allow network users to change my files checkboxes. You can also change the Share Name (the name it will be referred to as on the network) in the textbox.
