shared video memory?

hi, i just was just exlporing the video settings and looking at the stats of my computer, and found that it has 256 mb dedicated memory for my video card, but acer has alotted 2.8 gigs of my ram for shared memory.

I have a intel Q6600, ATI HD 2400 pro (256 mb) and 6 gigs of ram,
so i was wondering if i should be changing the shared memory given to my video card

also, on a sidenote, i was wondering if anyone could recommend a good video card for me, i'm basically gaming and doing some video editing on adobe premiere..something around 200$?

it's a 64 bit
i have vista 64 bit home edition dual booted with xp professional 64 bit
i'm planning on adding xp 32 bit to that too...

thanks for the cards
i was actually looking at the 9800 gtx and the ati HD 4850, but i'm still not sure about which one i should get
on tigerdirect.ca it says that the 9800 gtx supports dual dvi, hdtv, hdmi, and dual vga..is this true? on other sites, and from pictures i don't see that it supports vga?
also, i saw the ati hd 4870, which has 512 mb gddr5 memory...just wondering if thats worth it...saw it for around 330$
would it really make that much of a difference between the hd 4850 and the 4870?
and about the shared memory....if my computer adds another 2.8 gig memory for the video, woudln't it make a huge difference taking away the 2.8 gigs, leaving it with only 256 mb? wouldn't that make the performance of my games worse?
also i'd like to add a 32 bit xp cause some of the programs i've tried to run didnt' support a 64 bit os

Difference between HD 4850 and HD 4870 is that the HD 4870 is a newer model and has GDDR5 ram instead of GDDR3 ram, GDDR5 is better.

thanks for the cards

From what I've seen for the past years since DVI came along is that video cards that have DVI output usually come with adapters that change the DVI to VGA.

Adapters such as this one.

awesome..thanks for clearing up the confusion, so i'll just leave the shared memory as it is...

just wondering, can you guys tell me the pros and cons of going with the nvidia 9800 gtx, or the ati hd 4850?

right now i have a ati hd 2400 pro
but my mother board only has 1 pci-e slot, so XF or SLI are not options.

I don't know about ATi that much as I have trusted Nvidia alot longer. Ever since the purchase of the MX 4000 along time ago.

I can tell you the pros of a 9800gtx, im running cod4 maxed out @ 1680x1050 with no lag, fsx gets at least 40fps with aa/af on, all settings maxxed except traffic(thats just on ultra high preset), Battlefield 2/2142 Cranked runs fine. It gets about 16,500 3dmarks in 3dmark 06 in my sig rig. I really dont have any cons for it except that i dont have 2:p Not sure on the 4850 as im more of an nvidia person, last ati card i has was an x600 in my laptop.. which.. well.. sucked.

alright sick
i've had a few atis in the past too..they always seemed to find a way to make my computer freeze and do other random stuff
looks like im' gonna go with the 9800 gtx
thnx

alright i did some searching, and i'm deciding to go a little cheaper for the vid card, as im not doing heavy gaming, i just want something that'll keep up with me for what i do

can anyone tell me about the nvidia 8800? GT GS GTS
which ones the best?

and is the 8800 series really cheaper? i see some for more than 300 $ :S
