My friend passed me the orange box but when i typed in the cd key it says

"the product code you entered has already been activated by an existing steam acount, and therefore is invalid. Your subscription to the orange box retail has not been completed."

He has it uninstalled from his pc but it still won't work...

does this mean steam got wise and made it so that only one account can access these games no matter what?

It's how it's always been, Steam locks the game to that account so while you can use it on any PC in the world you still have to have an account with it licenced. You'll never get used Valve games for that purpose.

I like how they do it. When you buy a game from the store, you are actually paying mostly for a license of that game (and a few bucks for the CD/DVD and box). It is like when you purchase a game for download from steam. You buy it once, but can download it as many times as you need to. All I have to do is remember my login information, and I can re-download all of my games in one night when I get a new computer.

its so stupid. i went out and bought myself orange box, played it for a while, then upgraded my computer to vista. little did i know that steam was going to screw me over and not allow me to re-register. now i have to go out and buy it again. seems like such a waste and a giant scam.

What about your old Steam account? Just log in under that and install your game. I just did that the other night.
