I'm at college, and in my dorm room, I'm only allowed to have one computer on the internet at a time. I brought a switch with me, but it doesn't work quite the way I expected it to. With a lot of configuration I was able to set it up such that my desktop computer can connect to the internet, and my laptop can talk to my desktop, but not the internet. My theory is that the school network will allow my desktop on (it's using the IP address they gave me), but since I manually assigned an IP address to my laptop it's not allowed on the network (I tried the get IP address automaticly, but it was unable to get one from the school). I was wondering if it was possible to have my laptop connect to the internet through my desktop computer, since they can talk. I've only got one network card.

You could use the desktop as a proxy server for the laptop. In that case both computers would connect to the internet with the same IP. Here's a little program that could do this trick: http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network/proxy.htm.
