shocking isn't it? :)

Thats about what i would have expected, more people not joining becuaase they odnt want to die, then next they wouldn't want to be bossed around, but would be willing to fight, if they were just given a gun, then some just wouldn't.

yeah but money isnt limited right? i thought you get car and house and stuff

LOL if you got all that I'd be signing up right now. But seriously, my brother enlisted for 6 years a few months ago for active duty. He got a pretty big signing bonus which he bought a car with.

That poll isn't that surprising. I remember the recruiter over at our house saying roughly 1 out of 4000 eligible people choose to serve in the armed forces.

not anybody can join right i mean you can join but you still gotta pass some sort of test like with police or firefighters or they just train you until you are ready?

Right... many of us old farts can't hang with the young guns.

You have to be able to go through basic training, which consist of about 13 weeks of fairly intense training, depending on what branch of the service you join. I you get part of the way through and can't make it then they recycle you back to the beginning and it takes longer to finish the training. Some actually don't make it after several recycles... they just ain't got what it takes.

If you are in good physical shape it's not too bad, but if you are a little older and out of shape then it can get pretty tough on you.

The discipline is fairly harsh... in your face type training that a lot of people don't like. It can be intimidating and humiliating for some.

As SonnieP stated, you need to be in good physical shape. My brother was required to run 2 miles in under 13 minutes in order to graduate from basic training. He also had to do 36(?) military push-ups, which dosen't seem that hard but according to him they had to be PERFECT. Any errors and you were required to start over without a rest inbetween.

Correct. It's better to tough it out than whine about the training, because you will finish no matter how long it takes.

My brother wrote several letters home about how they humiliate you. If someone did something wrong, he would not have to do push-ups. Instead, he would stand in front of everyone and count 50 push-ups for everyone else to do. Now everyone is pissed at him.

That poll is about what I would expect... Personally, I'd never join the military. For one, it's just not my thing. I'm not the type of person that would really be "good" in the military. Plus, I'd rather do more with my life. I went to a community college for a couple years and I'm just about to start at a university. Basiaclly every class I was in had one person who was leaving the military. Now, if I'm not mistaking...aren't they suppose to prepare you for life, give you an education, and all that stuff? That's not been what I've seen. And I have a friend who's in the Navy. He does nothing, and isn't getting an education.

Just a note anytime you post a poll like that you should include the sorce. It helps the people seeing it determine how reliable it is and if it bias.

There's nothing wrong with those reasons. My point of view is you dont have to do anything you dont want to; it just comes down to whether you can live with the consequences

I would join a war, if i agreed with it, if they have me a gun and equipment and just gave be basic training on how to use the guns properally and everything. I wouldn;t go though all the crap training though, I wouldn't waste weeks of my life to die lol.

I sure am thankful that there are men and women out there who are willing to serve. I appreciate the freedom we have and hope we can keep it. We need them for this so I say a BIG thanks to those serving.

As long as we have plenty who are willing then it doesn't bother me that there are some who do not wish to join... as it stands right now, it is strictly a choice and I hope we can always keep it that way. I don't think it's a great idea to have someone protecting our country who doesn't want to be serving in that capacity. Having free choice just seems logical.

as i recalled if not the u.s. or some other countries where it is mandatory to serve.

Yes I've heard that before, where citizens are required to serve 2(?) years in the military. Personally I don't think it's a bad idea at all. I'll see if I can find out where.

And everyone, keep in mind that because you join the military it does not mean you will be on the front lines having bullets flying over your head. Infantry is one job, there are over 200 other options for you to choose (in the Army at least).

Israel, China, Cuba, the former Iraq, and a few others, but most countries don't require it. And I agree, a person who is serving in the armed forces by choice is like 5 to 10 people who aren't there by choice.

I'm in the Air Force and have been for three years. I don't get paid much money at all, we do work out and have a strick PT program, and there is SOME housing available on base. I have yet to deploy, and I do think the poll is biased. There are several branches of the military, the Air Force is nothing like anyone has described, including the poll

you say this as though it some distant whipser that you faintly remember hearing in some place you cant quite remember. :)
Consciption takes place in some of the most powerful richest nations of the world
russia,
china,
germany,
Greece
sweden (i think)

most of the middle east run some form of conscription, or "national service" since its technically peace time (but thats just symantics)
The fact is that conscripted are armies are crap, and always will be. It just a sign of a poor military fiscal policy.
All the countries that operate conscription have forms of bipassing it for the cleaver (you cant send your better brains to the army when they should be in university), or the rich (who can pay for doctor certificates, or fake phd's etc) so all you get left in the army are the poor and the dumb. Hence its crap
