Shopping tomorrow - someone stop me looking like a n00b in the store :)

Well I just got about £250 to spend on computer parts. Here's my situation.
I currently have an older socket 754 Pentium 4 and I'm switching to AMD, probably a Socket 939 3200+. Couple of questions. Will all my existing components work ok with this new mobo/cpu config? I have a micro ATX and I know I'll have to get a micro mobo for it. Also, does a mobo come with a heatsink and fan? Or will that come with the CPU or will I have to buy it separately and if so are they all compatible?
Help would be rather nice; I have to get the parts tomorrow.
Cheers,
Publius

first of all there is no such thing as a socket 754 Pentium 4...

and give us more details on ur components...

in answer to one of the question, stock heatsink and cooling will come with the CPU, not the motherboard.

However it is possible to buy OEM packs that are chip only. Most likely the ones you will see in the store will be the usualy retail pack with stock heatsink and fan included

Thank you.
My apologies, I didn't mean a 754 pentium, I meant whatever the older pentiums were. My current components are average RAM PC3200, 1gb (2x256, 1x512) a 160Gb SATA hard drive, a 350W PSU (to be upgraded imminently to a 500W) an FX5200 card which I will also replace ASAP.

wait

if you have a pentium and your sayin its a 754, your probably gettin it confused with an amd socket cause for pentium 4 that your thinking is prob 775 which is a current socket being used for celeron d, pentium 4 w/ht, and pentium d proc.upgrading would be pointless

I think you mean socket 478 Pentium 4.

You would need a new power supply, or an adapter since the one you have now is 20-Pin, and the 939's are 24-Pin.

The heatsink and fan come with the CPU, as long as you buy the retail package.

If you want a new motherboard, here's a list of things you need to buy...

1) Powersupply
2) CPU
3) Graphics card (if you're going with a pci-express motherboard)
