Shortcut to 2nd HD causes to start PC search

I made a shortcut of my F drive (large drive) and it was working fine. Then I did some twildling around (don't ask me what I did) and the icon for the F drive is gone and when I click on it it causes the Microsoft search dog thing to appear?
 
Possibly has the drive F turned to the drive G? Check the letter, it can swith if you plug in a thumb drive, or an ipod.
 
hi thanks for reply. I didn't explain right when I double click on it I see the attached pic.

right click the file, and select properties. What does it say for target?

F:\

that?

If it does say F, then go into my computer, and make sur ethere is an F drive listed.
 
Exactly what icon is gone? - the shorcut you created or the actual F drive in My Computer?

If you can go to My Computer and you see the F drive icon there, right-click on it. Now, from the options that pop up, what option is at the very top of the list in bold letters? Does is say "open" or "search"?

Read the thread, it is not gone... it goes to the wrong place.

@Trizoy: Yeah, I got the fact that it is going to the wrong place (i.e. double-click searches instead of opening it), and that is why I asked what appears as bold in the righ-click context menu for that drive. I was unclear with the whole "icon is gone.... yup is there..." and wanted to make sure we weren't dealing with more than one problem before I started suggesting registry changes to what I believe is the issue. In any case Trizoy, thanks for the clarification. Now I know we're only dealing with one problem.

OK Keano, so it sounds like your problem is a mix up in the registry and here is how you fix it:

You can read the Microsoft article about that here.
You can also download Doug Knox's fix for that here (in case you don't feel comfortable editing the registry yourself). His download should fix the problem with opening folders or drives (as in your case).

Now if you are comfortable with editing the registry yourself, I'll just paste the steps here:
  1. Start > Run and enter regedit
  2. Highlight the Default value under the registry key: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell
  3. Click Modify on the Edit menu.
  4. Type "none" in the value data box (without " "), and then click OK .
  5. Exit the Registry Editor
Note: If this problem ever happens with folders rather than with drives, then replace the word "Drive" in step 2 with the word "Directory"

That should solve your problem. Let us know if it did or didn't.

It says Search in bold and it should say Open.
