Should I get Skyrim or Oblivion?

Well Skyrim came out and I really want to get it but I really don't feel like spending 60 bucks on a game.

Is it worth it?

Or should I get Oblivion?

I really like a giant open world where I can do whatever i want and not be stuck to a storyline. This would be on PC.

I've never played an Elder Scrolls before except for a few hours in Morrowind. I stopped because it was so hideous to look at it and was really slow and boring at the beginning.
 
....I have to recommend Skyrim. It is more or less Oblivion where every feature is improved. It is not a purchase you will regret. Oblivion was an awesome game, but it is nothing compared to Skyrim. Bethesda really outdid themselves.
 
skyrim is closer to Morrowind in looks. If youre not sure spend the $20 on Oblivion, both are great games though. Skyrim didn't improve on everything though, there are aspects of Oblivion I liked more, mostly in how skills are leveled, or rather skills that Oblivion had that Skyrim doesn't.
 
It's been a few years since Oblivion, but Skyrim and it feel pretty similar. I would hope that Skyrim is improved as it's newer, but I don't think you could go wrong with Oblivion either.

You could probably find it for cheaper than $20. I'm thinking more like 5 if you shop around or look on ebay.
 
Obligatory things for Oblivion (in my opinion):
-patches
-patches made by the community
-Oblivion Script Extender (OBSE)
-mods like Martigen's Monster Mod

And if your computer can handle it:
-high resolution textures for EVERYTHING in the game
-Oblivion Graphics Extender (OBGE)
-OBGE water shader
 
idk but i remember i saw a thing that said there was a 40+ hour mad story with new characters and all that good stuff and was made well.

I don't have personal experience of this, but the release of the Steam-friendly version of Oblivion Script Extender (which is essential to quite a few mods) has apparently improved the situation.
 
Skyrim is one of the few games I am legitimately okay with spending $60. I wouldn't even spend that on BF3, and i love the BF games.

if skyrim was £100 id happily pay for it, its a superb game and ive yet to think of something i dont like about it
 
Of course 3 days after I spend 25 dollars on the Deluxe GOTY Edition they have sale and it's down to $6.74.

Oh well. :(
