Should I change my OS to Linux?

I am thinking to change my OS to linux. My computer has windows 2000 professional on it, and since it doesn't run any games anyway, I figure it will be a step up. Is this a good idea?

Wow you still have Windows 2000 professional

if you want to use it for gaming use windows XP

linux isnt really for gaming

If you look at his specs, that would be why he can't game - not because he runs Windows 2000.

What are you doing with your computer? I know games are out of the question but are there any other applications that you use on a daily basis?

I vote for a switch to Linux. One of the lighter versions for sure. if it weren't for gaming I would be a full time Linux user.

yeah you probally couldn't game on those specs

depends what you want to use it for if it is only web browsing then linux is proballythe best if you have a couple of programs then windows

I vote Linux, so long as you aren't dependent on any particular Microsoft programs. Personally, it'd be hard for me to switch from MS Office to something else, not because Linux doesn't support word documents, but because I'm just too used to word.

I really am not doing much on my machine, besides web browsing. I would have a completely new computer with windows XP, Vista or 7 if it weren't for lack of funds. I am able to use the family computer for gaming. Thanks all for your input!

But you can run MS office in linux.... :P

Oh wow and I though my computer is old and weak, but his computer...wow...it's even worse lol.And I thought it's impossible to beat my "strong" configuration xD

It completely depends on you what you want to use.Try some of the different Windows and Linux operating systems and you decide.

i agree with salvage this if only web broswing then use Linux i didn't see your specs i tend not to look at peoples signature so i thought you had a a great machine with windows 2000 and i was like what the hell?

I'd much prefer Linux Ubuntu over any older version of windows but you will need a little patience, there is a learning curve. Suggestion, dual boot until you are comfortable with the new OS. As for MS word users, you would find open office or libre just about the same, very fast learning curve, just a matter of learning where the buttons are located. Firefox browser exactly the same, Thunderbird email works better than outlook, easier to setup. Only problem with Linux is a poor selection of video editing software. Generally speaking most windows software has a free Linux equivalent. Linux is becoming more polished and will soon pose a direct threat to Microsoft. Best try Cinelerra for Debian video editing but it's no match for windows compatible editing programs.

Having now spent a little time with Ubuntu, I can say yes, this is true. Nothing too hard, but there are little things that come up that require a little research to tweak. Overall, I'm liking the OS.

Haha. A lot of people tend to forget Wine. It's a freakin miracle program. Heck, it can even install games. I played world of warcraft though it. If you want a faster system, I would go with damn small linux, puppy linux, or crunchbang.

That was my experience when I started too. I found that after a few months I was more comfortable in Ubuntu than I was in windows.

I agree. It's pretty incredible what It can do. I got MS office working with it in a matter of minutes. Pretty amazing.

Feel free to tell me this is a hijack and I should go start a new thread, but speaking of Wine, is there a way to use it to get netflix streaming working?
