Should I get the 8800GTX or wait for the R600?

Right now I'm buying a new computer and I'm getting a X1900GT card which will suit me just fine untill the new DX10 cards arrive.

So my question is as it sais in the title-
Should I jump right at the 8800GTX when it comes out or should I wait for the R600?

What do you guys think?
 
You should wait, then compare nVidias products with ATi's. That way you get to see reviews and careful testing, so that you know which is better. Or you may be disappointed.

Yeah but my patience has it's limits too.

I'm about to buy a computer for about 2300$-2500$ right now even thought I could wait for the DX10 and Quad Cores to come out. I just want to have a computer now because I'm rather bored without one and my old one barely works for the last couple of weeks.

The GF8800GTX will come out a lot earlier then the R600 so I'm really puzzled whether I should get the 88GTX right away or wait a little longer for the R600. To tell you the truth I have no doubt that the R600 will be stronger but the question is how long will I have to wait for it and will the wait be worthwhile.

Remember your spending 600+ buck for dx10 card or even more when they come out. So I would just hang out with a girlfriend in the movies by the time R600 comes out.
 
Quad core will be commercially available around Q3 07. I'd wait a few months before deciding anything. Or get a lower end core 2 duo and a quad core later. I think all mobos that work with conroe will work with quad later on.

Quad Core from Intel will be released in November. :D

Hanging around with my girlfriend for a few months can be quite frustrating. :D

frustrating?! ( mphh.. guys.. :P )

anyhow.. I'm thinking of getting a 8800GTX when they come out, dont know yet. I have no idea what Ati's card will be like,.. but im pretty sure it'll be heavy competition for the 8800GTX (maybe even better). but like you said, its comming out much later.

Before you decide anything, what pc do you have atm if i may ask? maybe its worth to upgrade some tiny things to make it better, so it'll forfill your needs till the DX10 cards are released :)

It's a single core AMD s939 and it doesn't even have a video card. It suited me well until the video card got burned down and I said to myself it's about time to buy a new computer.

For the computer itself I gave myself a budget of 2.5K.
I already have a Red Razer Copperhead (which I won by the way) and a Razer Mantis pad (which I also won. :D) so I don't need a mouse.

I thought about getting the G-15 Keyboard but I don't know how smart that will be so I think I'll just get a simple Logitech Internet Pro.

Now all I need is a good, big, LCD monitor that can go to high resolutions.

Never be ashamed of having something :) i used a 3000+ s939 CPU, untill i got the one i have now,.. and honestly, it was/is a really good CPU, still :)
assuming from the "doesnt have a video card" i assume it has onboard grafics, from it beeing s939, its probably a pci-e motherboard. ;)
maybe just get a 7600GT ( wich is about the best price/performance card atm imo ) and save the money till the DX10 cards are actually released

Good mouse (I assume),.. I'm more of a trackball person.. :P
I bought myself a G-15 yesterday,.. and i was truly impressed by it,. its a really BIG keyboard tough,.. so make sure you have some space for it... ither than that, it was really worth its money imo :)

as for the monitor.. define "high resolutions" please :P
I have a 19" , and it has 1280 x 1024 native resolution
 
Yeah well that's the problem with LCDs for me. Most of my friends have good, big CRTs and I always looked at them playing 1600x1200 or even higher and always said to myself that that's what I want. I tried looking for a goos CRT that can go this high or close to it and I couldn't find any that are also priced within reason. :(

Maybe I should just get some 22" CRT? CRTs are a whole lot cheaper then LCDs and they can easly go to 2048x1536, some even up to 2560x1600.

And the motherboard is PCI-E but I'm afraid to put something in the slot because when my old card (6600GT) went balistic on me, it actually cought fire and burned the mobo a little. I would go to the computer store and start busting some heads if it wasn't for the little fact this computer isn't mine... It's an old computer my friend had and gave it to me and he got it from Germany or something. So it's like that...
 
hmm... well, you could look for someone close to you who wants to get rid of his x300(SE) pci-e or so :P that would be like $10 2nd hand or so,.. then you could try if it works.

also, if you have the room for a CRT, and the power consumption isnt an issue, i dont see a reason not to go for one :) If i had to buy a new monitor atm,.. it would be a CRT again... the pixels of a LCD seem so square.. so the resolution is pretty notiable.. and SLI gives more of an advandage on high resolutions too.
 
well... CRT's are cheaper to make,.. LCD's use MUCH less power tough. ( my old 21"CRT used 125~130Watt, the LCD i have atm uses 25Watt at the same visible screen size) also, LCD's are much lighter, and dont need so much space. and usually a LCD makes something look better ( i think thats because of the contrast of the LCD's :) )

Well, I don't think power consumption is much of a problem but frankly I never heard of this.
The weight problem isn't really a problem for me as I'm not going to move it and I have a big desk in the corner of my room which has a big space between it and the wall so the size isn't an issue either I guess.

I think LCDs make things look better because the picture is allot closer to you and you dont have that protective glass layer which is like half an inch away from the actual screen.

Those aren't real quad cores, just fake ones. Real ones will be out in fall of next year.

Heck no. LCD's contrast is way lower than that of a CRT.
