Should I get Vista?

I mainly want it because I want to get a 64bit OS, and I want DX10. Also, almost any computer that's bought new now days has a 64bit processor, so 64bit CPU's will probably become standard soon.

I was wondering if my machine can handle Vista Home Premium without being completely killed. Here are the specs.

Processor: AMD 64X2 6400+ (3.2GHz) (eventually buying an intel Q9300)

RAM: G-Skill 2GB DDR2 Dual-Channel 800Mhz PC6400 (buying a dual channel 4GB set from G-Skill soon)

Hard Drive: Seagate 250GB 7200RPM 3GB Transfer SATA

Motherboard: Biostar TF520 one PCI Express x16 three PCI and two PCI Express X1 (buying an EVGA socket 775 with Nvidia 780i chipset when I buy intel CPU)

Sound Card: integrated at the moment but after Christmas I'm buying the Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer with 7.1 Channels

Graphics Card: 8800GTS (G92) 512MB GDDR3

So tell me if I can run it fine with what I have, and if not, tell me which upgrades I would need for it to run smoothly. I'm hoping that just the RAM upgrade will make it run good so I don't have to wait until I get my Intel setup to run it well.

Seeing as how dx10 is not availible for xp I guess your going with vista! GEt vista ultimate, install, then order the 64bit disk and install that. Walla

I take that back, it is availible for xp but runs way smoother on vista as vista requires dx10. I think you will get more out of the graphics department with vista. Your specs are def enough to play the newer games. What's the cache speed on the hdd?

Wait, what? Install vista then get the 64bit disc? I was told you can't upgrade from 32bit OS to 64bit OS, plus I think it'd be cheaper to buy one disc. I'm not wasting all that money on ultimate. Plus Ultimate would completely kill my computer's power.

Do you have vista now? I dont think you understand!! You have to buy the full version of vista, which only comes in 32bit. Then order the 64bit disk from microsoft which is only $10 or so. There is no such thing as a full installer of vista 64bit!!

You can't upgrade from 32bit to 64bit anyways. And even if you can, I'm not spending extra money. And I've never seen upgrades between 64bit OS's, so I don't think a non OEM would make a difference.

And even so, I'll just buy another OEM later. The money saved is worth reinstall everything in my opinion. Plus it's a chance to clean out my hard drive.

Actually you can upgrade from 32bit to 64bit!

Why waste money on it?

Explain what's better about premium vs ultimate, and if I actually will use anything in ultimate that's better I might consider it.

I really dont have to bribe you! You can choose on your own but the big thing for me is that with Ultimate you can use Virtual pc 2007! And I believe that with Ultimate the security is better.

Virtual pc is where you can run an os inside an os. Its like the program called vmware. Check out some vids on youtube to see what im talking about.

Another question real quick.

What's an easy way to check if my hardware is compatible with 64bit Vista? I'm pretty sure my graphics card is since it supports DX10, and if that doesn't mean it does, someone needs to be shot. My CPU is of a 64bit series, so that should as well. Not really sure about my motherboard, DVD/CD drive, my monitor, and my sound card.

Also what I forgot on that list was my Creative Sound Blaster Extreme Audio.

Really? I have my Vista Home Premium DVD OEM sat in front of me and it clearly states on the DVD "This disc contains 64-bit software only" Anyone can buy OEM you do not need to be a system builder, the licensing was changed. OEM will save you a good deal of money. I bought my Vista Home Premium 64bit for £70 which is about $137
