Should I stop how I'm typing now or continue?

Well in school they always teach you to type with the home position and how certain fingers touch certain keys and only those fingers. I have my own way of typing that is so much faster to me and I've been doing it for a couple years now. Everyone at school is amazed at how fast I type. I'm 15 years old and I was wondering, should I get used to using the home position again, or do whatever works for me?

Get a dvorak keyboard and you will be able to go much faster.

The original keyboards were designed to be the most Inneffieceint, that is the qwerty keyboard. It was made to be inneffiecint so old type writers would not get the swing arms all tied up.

The dvorak keyboard has the most used keys in the center of the keyboard, thus allows much higher typing speeds.

But on your questions, follow what you know, and tell your typing teacher you are effiecient at your way... and don't wish to learn theirs.

It is simply a different way, not better not worse.

It depends does your way work if you are looking at the screen and not your fingers? Or maybe if you are looking at a hand-written paper you need to type up? I personally don't quite use home row keys but I am close to using them.

The qwerty keyboard wasn't made to be ineficiant, it was made so that the most used keys would be seperate to keep the most used sqing arms seperate, and so obviously less jams.

One example of this is that when you type you type a key at one end of the heyboard and then the other.

How do you type, out of curiosity?

Also, I've thought about learning a dvorak keyboard, but I'm afraid that I'll get so used to it that I'll have problems with a qwerty... which are everywhere.

well i type a little under 110 wpm on a qwerty keyboard, so i'm pretty sure that a dvorak keyboard wouldn't improve my speed by a whole lot.

I dunno like I just type with my fingers that are closest to the key I want to press depending on how my hands are hovered over the keyboard. And I don't look at the keyboard at all. It's really weird like my left hand is basically home position but my right hand is all over the place.

Was there a point to this thread? Or did you just feel like telling us how fast you type?

Here's your gold star, champ

Congratulations!

That's exactly how I type. I tried learning from classes, but I didn't like the style. So I've created my own now. But obviously it's not my own anymore :P

Thats how I type to. When I had to take those typing classes I really didn't pay attention and just taught myself how to type.

I took typing last year. I was pretty much in the right form. But the home row thing really allowed me to use my pinkys more, and I started that class at 85WPM, and can now do 115WPM at 98% efficiency.

They can't make you change!

I'ved typed my own way for years. I've tried putting my fingers on the designated keys (as such) but once you are used to your personal layout, you'll never be as good.

Edit/ To the above post, 115RPM with a 98% effeciency!? That's insanely fast. On the right keyboard, I can handle 92WPM with a 97% effeciency. That is some CRAZY fast typing!

If you guys are typing at insanely fast rates and not looking at the keys, maybe you should be approaching typing instructors and be the ones doing the teaching!

http://www.typingtest.com/test/default.asp

Take that typing test, and take the Wonder World of Oz one (or something like that). There was a thread on this but I can't seem to find it right now. I can type up to 104wpm, what's yours?

I took that test on my laptop and only got 44 wpm with 2 errors but that is because I am on my laptop I'll see what I can do when I am going to be on my desktop in a few minutes.

At home i type exclusively on laptop right now and get 100wpm or better on most of those tests.

there is actually a girl in my school who types between 120-130 wpm.....now that is insanely fast
