Should I stop how I'm typing now or continue?

They can't make you change!

I'ved typed my own way for years. I've tried putting my fingers on the designated keys (as such) but once you are used to your personal layout, you'll never be as good.

Edit/ To the above post, 115RPM with a 98% effeciency!? That's insanely fast. On the right keyboard, I can handle 92WPM with a 97% effeciency. That is some CRAZY fast typing!

lol I remember the first day of class last year. The teacher was like I can type 85 WPM and everybody was like "WOW". But then I showed her up, lol that class was boring, seeing that it was intro to word, hehe.

To all you people getting 100+ WPM, how can I learn to type that fast?

And do you use Dvorak, or qwerty?

Im not as fast as many. I thought you might be interested though in this information. The keyboard today was designed to actually slow ya done. The standard keys was designed for the old mechanical type writer. The reason being two mechanical keys would come up at the same time and jam.
The dvorak is faster but honestly im not comfortable with it. On the other hand all the keyboards at work are using the standard key set.

I tried dvorak got to about 40 WPM and gave up because going back and forth between campus and home was not cool. The main reason I switched back is I absolutely HATED the placement of "s" It was horrible after about 10 minutes my pinkie finger was about to fall off.

But on your questions, follow what you know, and tell your typing teacher you are effiecient at your way... and don't wish to learn theirs.

I tried that when I was a Sophomore - it didn't work. I got the 'In order to pass this class, you must successfully complete all aspects, one of which being typing this way' speech. I had been playing GemStone for years at that point and was flying through with my own way of typing. Odd thing though, I'd probably smoke my old teacher now typing the standard way.

schools only teach that way because its the 'proper' way of typing.
i say keep typing how you do if its faster for you.

i mostly type by using my index fingers and my middle fingers for other nearby keys and can type pretty fast. it really doesn't matter 'how' you type, eventually you will still learn the layout of the keyboard and be able to type fine and fast with however many fingers you use.
