hello,

i have a dell inspiron 6400/e1505 laptop, before that i had a dell desktop, with decent specs (better than my current laptop).

I usually had my desktop running 3-4 days , then restart, and keep going, but i would only turn it off if i leave for couple of days.

I was wondering if i can do same with laptops or if laptops should be turned off a night? for some reason i think laptops arent as tough as desktops, but maybe im wrong, so please tell me what should i do?

Thanks

Alex i have an XPSM140 and its only off when its in transit somewhere and since its been summer time my laptop has been on for like 3 straight months with 1 week off while i was on vacation. It does not hurt them to be on as long as you have a screen saver set to come on and run so you dont get burn in's on your screen.

Codeman...please don't post if you don't know what you're talking about... LCD screen's don't burn, and it's very difficult to burn newer CRTs.

As for leaving them on, that only puts more wear on the hardware. Laptop's tend to get very hot, so you need to be sure it's got very good cooling. Their harddrives tend to give out much faster than desktop ones, so I'd be sure it'd spin down.

Personally, I never leave my laptop on when I'm not using it. Besides the fact mine gets WAY too hot after being left on for about an hour, I'm really trying to preserve the hardware.

Hey other one i have a lcd at home(syncmaster 175v i believe) from a work computer that was left on continously without a screen saver and you can seen the burn in marks on it maybe its a fluke but i most definately have one man. As far as cooling for the laptop i have a targus cooler that sits under it with 2 fans that suck the heat and blow it off the back and it seems to keep my laptop running at a steady 100 degrees F or less sometimes it gets up to like 120 when i'm really using the computer. I will have to take a picture and show the lcd screen to you guys when i get home you can really see it when its got like a solid color displaying on it. If its not a burn in its definately a burn mark of some kind from use. If i'm wrong i applogize for giving wrong information maybe you can clear it up for me when i show you guys a picture of what it is...

I did a little research and technically, there is a burn in problem with LCDs, so sorry about getting a little jumpy. However, LCDs work in totally different ways than CRTs. Rather than so much of a burn in problem, though, you can get more of an "image persistence" problem which is commonly reversable.

Laptops are not desktops. Their cooling system is totally different. I strongly advise all laptop users to shut down their laptops after using it and don't leave it switch on and idle. The amount of heat generated will kill all the internal circuit components.
