Just wondering, if it is recommended by its users to update other then just microsoft.

I havn't heard of much problems being related to windows 7 updates.. nor do I know if it is really helpful either though.

any input on this would be great, was always wondering and never came around ever getting updates on my windows, but I recently got win 7 ultimate on my brand new comp and just being curious again.

I wouldnt install an update unless it fixes an issue you are having.

The only updates I routinely install are the definition updates for MSE, and sometimes a hotfix if I am having a issue with it. Point being, windows update has this querky habit of installing updates that do not apply. (I have a "Crossfire hotfix" update sitting in the notification bar that dont apply to my dainty little HD4270 IGPU laptop. also several hotfixes for SSDs that I dont have.)

Thanks Wolfe, alot of them don't really exactly specify what they are updating for example

KB2454826
This is a reliability update. Install this update to enable a set of performance and functionality updates for graphics, Media Foundation, and XPS components on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 systems. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.

got a bunch of of ones like these that say something similar about performance and a ton of security updates..but I can tell which ones i'll need of those.

did you download all the performance updates? xD

I have found the reliability updates to be quite helpful. I have windows fully updated, for the first time ever, I usually don't bother with any updates unless needed, but I thought I would give it a try once, I just crazy like that :D, I have had no issues at all, at least so far.

critical and security updates always. I look at the updates and pick and choose. One might be a hardware fix or for dedicated for software. You can view the updates. You don't have to take them all. view them and whats available.
