Should I upgrade processor?

I have an opteron 146 @ 2.7ghz. I was wondering, since my mobo can't support the new dual cores, is it worth upgrading to the x2's? I would prolly get the low end one for $100 or so and oc it to 2.6ghz. I also have a 8800gts superclocked 320mb. Would this up my gaming performance a lot? (i'm thinking my processor is my bottleneck as i am getting 7300 points in 3dmark06).
Thanks

Hmm

Honestly, I think you would be better to keep the money and leave it for now. You would not get all that much extra when it comes down to gaming. Save the money and when the time is right, buy a new PC.

Also agree with jan. Get a new x2 or something...orif your intereested in Intel Get the E4300 or E6600 or even the quad cores...

You could do that.. Or you could save the 1k+ that would be spent on the new system and go with your idea.

Jan's right that a X2 wouldn't give extra performance in gaming at this point in time as the majority of games aren't multithreaded.. but we should be seeing more of these very soon in the future.

Just be aware that hype surrounding the Core2duo line of chips is unproportionate; you wouldn't actually notice the difference using a C2d and it's direct X2 competitor. :)
