Should i Upgrade.

This is my current system:

Q9650 running at 3.6
Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P
Corsair 800mhz mem
Saphire 4870x2

I use the computer for alot of gaming and video encoding. Should i upgrade to core i7 or should i just upgrade my video card to a radeon h5970? I was thinking this setup:

ASUS P6X58D Premium LGA 1366 Intel X58
Intel Core i7-930 2.8GHz
CORSAIR DOMINATOR-GT 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2000
with the same video card
 
Really, your system is fine. But if you feel you have to upgrade, I would upgrade the proc to an i5 and the video card to something like the 5770, seems to be very popular.
 
yeah your computer is better than the one i am working on. even though mine is a major upgrade from my old dell. this new one does great and plays modern warfare 2 (the whole reason i built it lol)(new comp in sig)
 
Consider what Elimin8or said.. i5 = faster encoding and when playning multi-threaded games.. 5770 DX11 and i'm not sure about performance. but, i think it might be around the same performance as the two of your cards in sli.. I'm not sure though..

You think a 5770 has the same performance as two 4870 X2 in C/F not SLI? He said he was thinking about a 5970.
 
Not worth it imo...your current setup should be running everything currently out there with ease.

That CPU is a Yorkfield, right? 45nm with a 12MB L2 cache? You won't see a huge difference by switching to the i5, though the i7 and its 8 threads would definitely help.

However, if you're gaming, go for the 5970. Your CPU is just fine...the 5970 would still be the bottleneck, I think, though just barely.

If you have money upgrade with core i7 and selling the current CPU + Mobo + RAM as they are still in retain high value.
While for video card, I don't see the point of 5970 at the moment. Consider it at least 2 - 3 weeks later to see if nivida new card have any effect on price. However, I believe 4870 x 2 still run everything fine.
BTW, I think you should consider SSD if you have money.
