yo,

i recently purchased a Thermalright Ultra eXtreme 120 Cooler with a Sycthe 120mm Fan. this heatsink comes already with thermal compound (in the 3rd picture you can see the tube).

im tossing up whether i should use the paste that comes with it or should i go out and buy a tube of Artic Silver 5? how much better is AS5 than most compounds?

The last part of that quesion will be the 99% type of response you can expect on this! A Scythe fan on the hsf there? YEEEOOOWWWW! Watch the cheapo fan doesn't quit on you on fast. The mistake of buying one by that make cost the cpu on the last build when the fan simply went out for lunch and the cpu "cooked"! ggggrrrrr....!!! here on Scythe!!! Go for Zalman or Arctic Cooling!!! :D

yer but this fan has been rated to be the best "companion" for this cooler, it proves to beat most cpu coolers by heaps, for example the tuniq tower gets wooped by it, the big typhoon and most water cooling blocks... what do u think about noctua fans? because i have purchased 5 of these so i can choose what fan to put on there.

If you don't plan on overclocking, the stock compound should work fine. If you plan to OC, I'd buy the Artic. You will notice a drop in temps using the Artic thermal compound.

I've seen where the paste or whatever included was some white colored cheap ceramic type while AS5 is about the top choice even for a stock setup. When ordering the Zalman model here with a 92mm fan I simply tossed the other stuff and apllied AS5. It has now been over 1yr.'s time without one temp problem seen with the usual dust blowout session keeping fans running good. I currently have been seeing 35C idle, 36C while gaming. This is on a system that runs nearly 20hrs. daily!

That's typical! I see this all the time where if you want something good you have to find some place online. That was the same with high quaility sata cables over simply going to local repair shop for the typical 19". The ones ordered are only 12 inches long and work here for tucking them in. It's just another nuisance however.

Where are you getting this from? If it's ebay, a lot of sellers will sell the AS5 for a low price, and jack up the postage cost to reduce the ebay fees.

That's plainly ridiculous for shipping, though. Take a look at http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=Arctic+Silver+5. It sorts best prices on AS5 from a variety of retailers. Hopefully you can find a seller you like. Personally, I often end up buying from www.msy.com.au but unfortunately they have no stores in WA.

yeah.. bought one from ebay before... the shiipping was twice the bid price, and it was barely 2 inches long >(
Newegg charges $5.99 for the AS5, and $4.99 for the shipping. But it's worth it since it can be applied to at least a dozen heat sinks.

Master Mind can't order from newegg there. They don't ship orders outside of the U.S. which would most likely also see high shipping costs there. :(

One thought is asking some pc repair what they would charge for a tube or for ordering through them. If the price is higher walk away. But they usually can order from a wholesaler for cost at times. That was one idea to pass along.

Generally a repair shop may charge a little more for a tube they already have on hand. But you pay a little over their cost and could avoid shipping costs altogether. They have to order more then "just one" tube to keep their own business running. That could be a big help if you can't find a good deal yourself when trying to place an order.

i apologise for the double post people :p

i have been talking to nintek through msn and they have saved me $15 postage. i asked how i can avoid paying 15 bucks for postage. so he added it to my other order (5 noctua fans) which i "acquired" free postage due to an offer with the manufacturer's fans... i ordered a 12g tube of AS5 for AU$19.95 with free postage

Sounds great! To remove the duplicate post simply click the edit button and choose the "delete message" option or simply have a mod take of that. The edit button is faster! :P But it looks likes things are working out better for you on this. Whenever you can add something to an order already placed and save some cash go for it! :D
