Should I wait for this cpu or just get it?

Ok I JUST upgraded my cpu like a month and a half ago. I'm going to upgrade my gpu and get some more ram. As I was browsing newegg, which is ALWAYS dangerous, I noticed that the 939 X2 4200+ was only $200. Now I'm wondering if the price will go down further or if I should just go for it? Is an X2 processor THAT good? I'm only using this thing for school and gaming. So what does everyone think?

well since your mobo is 939 you might think about getting an X2
but a Conroe will be a better choice at this time however it's gonna cost you a total upgrade (Mobo, RAM)
so how's your budget ?

you wouldn't necessarily need to update the ram, his current ram would work

doesn't socket 939 mobos deal with DDR
and conroe mobos deal with DDR2
you would necessarily need to update the ram, his current ram would work
EDIT: i guess there is a wouldn't in these 2 :)

think the VIA PT880 chipset allows conroe and ddr usage (so no need for ddr2)
It also allows agp usage for dinosaurs like mine
didn't know that but
still grammatically there should be a wouldn't :P

Isn't the Conroe by Intel? For my budget, I'm looking at $300 for gpu, $120 for 2x512mb ram, and I was just looking at upgrading my processor to a dual core b/c it was so cheap. I really hate Intel and I won't switch back to them.

The question I'm asking is will dual core be a better solution for me? I want to play high end games and also use it for school, internet, etc.

I don't think you should hate Intel anymore. Conroes kick AMD's ass. I will probably still go with AMD now that they're cheaper (i usually make like $750 computers). If you don't want a full upgrade, then get the 4200 or maybe the 4600 now that they're so cheap

thats bacause im an idiot who cant type :)
keep an eye on my posts, you will see load or "you" when I mean to say "your"
and i often drop of the "s" in the end of plural words.
Guess im typing dyslexic :D

What you really want, what everyone one needs, is some sort of program you can run that will tell you what the bottleneck in your computer would be under different scenarios.

Obviously, there is going to be a jump in performance from a single core to a dual core, but with new CPU lines being released by both Intel (in stock soon) and AMD (early next year/late this year) you want to think to yourself - do I upgrade what i have now, or save money to buy a new CPU, Motherboard and sticks of memory?

I love the conroes, but dont they only operate on lga775 with lower voltages or something, because, there are some lga775s that dont support them???

read this and then tell me if you still hate intel :)

Thanks for the link! I will read it when I have more time :) I've NEVER been a fan of intel. I think that the conroe is great and better than amd....right now. I don't want a chip that is great just right now. I want a chip that I can have and use for a long time. I'm thinking of going to AM2 but I'm still going to wait. Thanks again!

Did I read that correctly? Is AMD coming out with new chips in a bit? What socket are they going to be and what chips are they exactly? If they are coming out with new ones then I'll just wait.

Most games right now don't take advantage of the option for dual core so a very powerful single core processor would be best for the current games but as newer games come out, they will be designed to use dual core so for the most life out of the cpu i would go dual core. You'd be fine getting a new high end x2 right now and you can get it cheap, the only reason i think right now why someone would buy conroe is because 1) they have enough money to have the best stuff all the time or 2) they were planning on getting a new computer anyways and want to have the best for the money (that's me)
