I heard that microsoft is planning on making it free to update from vista to 7 if your os was bought after 1st of july this year. Windows 7 is supposed to come out some time next year i think.

The release candidate will be out in May, and it may show up on some Netbooks before the end of the year.

I also heard there will be no free upgrade from Vista.

It's a personal decision. I wouldn't buy Vista right now though for a computer build - knowing that Windows 7 is coming out in a few months.
