Do you think that new desktops and laptops should come with windows pre-installed and should the retailer give you the choice.

Well I wouldn't want it to come pre-installed in my personal opinion because of all the useless crap that HP, Dell, etc. put on there.

It should be up to the customer but that will never happen.

Dell and HP were the two first major companies to offer Linux pre-installed on their systems. That royally pissed off MS. At the same time Intel was giving Dell bulk deals if they only used Intel processors in their machines, which breaks some anti trust laws if you didn't know.

Why should an OS be any different?

I say give the customer the choice. MS doesn't own any giant computer manufacturer so they have no say in it. However, their lawyers and lobbyist definitely go to these companies and sweeten the deal.

It would be ok to give you the option to not have a OS installed. But 90% of people that buy OEM computers dont have a clue how to install a OS much less installing drivers. So you would end up with alot more people frustrated just trying to install a OS with all the problems that can come with even that. Thats not even counting the people that pissed with the OS after its installed. It would probably just double your troubles.

i think the customer should have the choice for themselves. if they want to buy a PC without an OS already on it to save themselves some money, i think they should be able to do that.

the ones that choose to buy an OS should get one without all that CRAP they put on like AOL and 15,000 different photo editing programs.

i bought a compaq back in the day and i swear it took me a full afternoon to get rid of all the crap programs that came on it.

Ah, i remember the days before CCleaner. :)

Whenever i reinstall an old OS i just leave all the crap on there, nostalgia :D

i chose 'up to the customer'
i mean, for alot of people, a 'harddrive' is the entire system > they need less choice, more knowledge..

but for like, CF'ers, i'd say let us pick. If i want Ubuntu Studio, why would i spend $100 on preinstalled shit?

I agree 100% all the crap companies put on there! Should be up to the customer, in my opnion :)

Windows is still the universally supported o/s, whether it's any good or not is beside the point.

All built PCs should come with it preinstalled, what else are you gonna give them? Linux (or version of)? Most people don't even know what it is, let alone care. But sure, the option could be there (as I'm sure it is from many online pc sellers), not that anyone would take it up (for the most part).

It should be a clean install of windows though, no antivirus/video/audio/blah rubbish which will slow everything to a crawl.

I believe it should be up to the customer.

Personally, I would prefer to install it myself so I don't get all the bloatware that comes on a new system.

The reason Hp and Dell offer linux is that its free, also last time I checked circuit city and best buy all the computers are preinstalled with windows but its included in the price.
