I'm running Vista 64 and my folders are always set to 'hide file names' by default. I know I can change this b going to view- then uncheck this option, but it will revert back to hiding them if I restart my PC. Is there a way to set all folders to show file names by default?

It shouldn't be changing back. It stays for me.

I buddy of mine had this problem, after tickering with the per folder options it worked.
What happens is vista assumes you want to hide the extensions naturally, this may be conflicting on restart. Try to set this per folder basis, follow this guide,
