Shrinking PDF files

I need to be able to shrink large PDF files in order to send them via e-mail. Is there a way to do that without buying the whole Adobe program? I don't mind spending some money on a utility program but I really don't want to spend $180 or whatever it costs for the full system.

I know there are some shareware programs out there but I'm not sure which ones might work good for me, and I guess I'm a little afraid of downloading some kind of virus. Anyone have any suggestions or a program that you've used and been happy with?

I did download a PDF creator similar to CUTE PDF but it doesn't let me resize an already-created PDF. I did try zipping them in the normal way but it didn't really help much at all. The zipping you mentioned, is that something different than the normal one you use with Windows?
