before we get to the issue...have you ever done a test restore from your backup ? I have seen big companies for years do backups that one day they find that they can not restore the data for some reason. If you have valuable data, I would by a program, not relly on something free, there is also the back up program in windows, that you can also backup the system state, which not only backs it up it makes a copy of all your registry, I think in \\windows\config\backup.... so if you boot up one day and you get a blue screen that says windows\system32\config\sytem can not be loaded, the system part of the reg, you can just copy the system file from \config\backup , which will only be there if you do a backup from windows backup prog. All you have to do is back up one file to get to back up the system state. So what type of back up are you doing, file by file or an image?
What I do is use acronis true image... I take the side cover off my computer and image the hard drive to another hard drive...or image to a folder. Then if you need a file it can be extracted...or yoy can re-mage a hard drive and boot if your main HD goes bad.
