video card: ge force gtx 275 : 896MB
power supply: xion :XON-700P12N ; 700w
case fans (3) nzxt : 120mm front, back, side

i pretty much dont know anything about computers.so bare with me. playing certain games the computer shuts down. unless i take the side of the case off and put a regular house fan pointing on it. temp display on the case cpu is 40*c hdd 37* sys 40* roughly when shuts down. idle they're all about 35*. i was lookin around and saw that some people would idle around where my computer shuts down. dont know what else to look at? help is appreciated

For others looking at this, the power supply is quad rail, 18A/18A/18A/20A.

Your temps look fine, but you didn't post your GPU temp. Try something like HWMonitor to see what it maxes out at.

Typically problems like your having are power supply related. Unless you have a similar power supply you could swap out to test, I'd suggest trying to update all your drivers (video, sound, motherboard/chipset). You could also go to eventviewer (start > run/search > eventvwr.msc ) and see if you have any major errors and what they relate to.

As The Other One said, we need to check out the GPU temp, because most likely the reason its crashing during a game. Since you said your knowledge of computers is limited I assume theres no overclock on it, making it unstable?

Yeah anyway, wait for a PSU guru to say if its that or if its temp related.

If you don't have access or don't trust the displaying temps, there's an easy test to see what's going on.

Open your side panel the next time you go to play a game.

The system will shut down again, likely faster without a side panel. Gently and carefully touch the surface of the heatsink on the graphics card. Bring your finger close before you touch.

If it's really hot (I'm guessing it will be) you know the GPU is likely the problem.

Options:
1) Get a spot cooling fan that lets you place it anywhere and blow air away from the fan in the GPU.

2) Mount a regular case fan below the GPU so that it carries hot air away from the fan. When this happened to a gaming rig I had I cut the side panel for a place to mount a fan right below the graphics card. Worked very well.

3) Throw your PC in a creek or other body of water. (Maybe)

i got cpuid and its not showing me gpu temp. i played last night and it wouldnt shut down on me. had no side panel on it. im not sure what overclock is but this was built from someone else that knows what hes looking at. i just gave him the money to build. it is possible there is i just dont know what im looking for. it was built at ibuypower about 4 or 5 months ago so if i can stay away from the water that would be great. hah. i can get you a screen shot of cpuid a little later im just not on that comp right now. thanks again

Did you overclock your CPU/GPU lately? What cooling have you got on both? Standard? Did you look at the temp. while playing the game?

Take you PC out on the trip around the room, unscrew it and with a vacuum cleaner and a brush clean the cooling system and fans around your case. If you haven't done that then probably there will be like 1kg of dust.

And no, don't really bother touching the heatsink for GPU because you're not really going to feel it and won't guess the temperature.

have not overclocked anything. theres a heatsink/fan on both the vid card and on the cpu. the front display on my tower got to 44* on cpu 32* on hdd and 43* on the sys while playing a game. everything has been cleaned prior. again cpuid isnt showing me my gpu temp dont know how else to view it
