just been asked to fix a pc running xp home that wont shutdown properly,
everything else works fine except when you go to start-turn off and click on it, you get the hour glass symbol and nothing happens. All you can do then is the three finger salute(ctrl/alt/del) and select turn off in task manager which then proceeds to take about 2 1/2 mins to shut down the system. I looked in MSCONFIG, and in the Boot ini tab I found a path for win2000pro which explained the dual boot option at POST, so i deleted the obselete path from the BOOT INI tab which solved that little problem but i'm wondering if there are files left over from their win2000pro install that have corrupted win xp.
I've run a repair using my copy of xp home in the hope of replacing missing or changed registry entries and(as my disk was pre SP2) reinstalled SP2 but the problem is still there. I've also run sfc /scannow and disk check but still no joy. Is my only option to reinstall the OS or is there any clever gits out there that know a fix I could try as they have a HELL of a lot of drivers and softwares to reinstall and i don't fancy doing it if i don't have to.
