Hey, iv been having some problems with a computer.

Its old, the specs are...

Windows XP Home Ed
AMD Atholon(tm) 1GHZ
240RAM
40G HD
I know its old, but its been working fine, befor the problem. The problem is, after a few mins(usaly 20-40 mnis...) the computer shuts down. Then it starts to beep... so we unplug the power. Also , get some monitor error at start up, but dont think thats big.

We started getting this problem ever since we re-ranged our basement. Now we haev 3 computers next to each other, with 3 diffent power outlets. I tried changing the power cables, the outlet, but nothing helps.

I was thinking it was over heating, but how do i fix that? Also, i cleaned the fans( i dont have caned air, so i can still clean more, but got ALOT of dust out last time with out it) so i thought that might help. but it didnt.

Can anyone help me? I really wound like it to get working again... its very annoying.

Thanks in advance

well i wouldnt say your systems old, my newest computer only has 664MHZ lol, can you hear the case fan running? or open the case and while it's running see if the fans working.

Well, normal cmmputers now adays have 2 fans right? Well, this computer has at least 1, i cant find the other, but i think i know where it is.In side a metal box... The one fan I can see is in a hard place, but im pretty sure its running/spinning/working. The other i dont know... hard to tell.

Check the processor heatsink to see if its full of dirt, could be a over heating processor. Does it start right back up or do you have to let it sit for awhile?

Yah, that might be it... this is what happends

After it shuts down, it start to make beeping noises. So we wait, and it stops after a few seconds. Then, we try to turn it back on and it wont. We unplug the power, and stuff, and after we re-plug it, it works. But normaly, it wont turn on for a few mins.

:o

beeping noises are usally to do with the memory but it could be the cpu heat sink take the heatsink and fan off the cpu and clean off the past then replace the past with some artic silver clean out fan and replace if that solves the problem fine if not i would start thinking about the memory being bad you said you only have 240 mb of memory are you sure its not 256mb also windows xp really will need 256mb of memory minimun to run smoothly try taking out the memory and blowing any dust from it and reseating it

you said you only have 240 mb of memory are you sure its not 256mb also windows xp really will need 256mb of memory minimun to run smoothly try taking out the memory and blowing any dust from it and reseating it

Well, i have a chip, RAM that has 256, but it saids it only has 240... all my computers are like that. I got 512, shows i have like 478 or something... usaly.

intergrated graphics will take a chunk out of your memory for its own usage.

As has been suggested here it might need a good clean more than anything. possibly the fans aint working to their full potential due to crap clogging it.

Also whats the reason that the other fan is hard to see? I only ask cos it suggests that its possibly behind cables and such, if so then it might be worth tidying the cables so that the air flow through the case is less restricted.

isnt chip ram a amiga type memory anyway take it out blow any dust off it and reseat it if that doesnt work replace the thermal past on your cpu

it wont turn on for a few mins.
do you keep pusing the power button and unplugging it to get it turned on, this happens on mine, i looked in the manual for my case and apparently its because of somthing called "soft power" dunno weather it will be the same prob on ures,

note i dunno how to fix the above, just let u no what its called

to be honest with everyone in this thread, i dont think dust will be a major problem, i think it could either be a power supply fan prob, a cpu fan prob.

what you could do is try running it without the case side/lid

ill look into it
